SolarEdge presents its bidirectional charger for electric cars

SolarEdge, world leader in Smart Energy technologies, presents a new bidirectional direct current charger for electric vehicles.

The new charger will enable solar-powered Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functions and is expected to be commercially available in the second half of 2024. Based on SolarEdge's innovative DC architecture , the charger is expected to offer several advantages:

Charge electric vehicles using photovoltaics without unnecessary conversions from alternating current (AC) to DC. Fast charging of up to 24 kW by simultaneously extracting electricity from the photovoltaic generator, the home battery and the grid, avoiding the home's AC infrastructure and the limitations of the car charger.

Charge the electric vehicle with excess photovoltaic energy, thus taking advantage of the DC to AC oversizing of SolarEdge inverters (up to 200%).

Additionally, the SolarEdge ONE energy optimization system will deliver greater savings by applying intelligent algorithms to calculate dynamic utility pricing and autonomously charge and discharge the EV battery. This will allow owners to receive payments from their electricity supplier during demand response events, by downloading the energy stored in the batteries of their electric vehicles to the grid (V2G).

Additionally, the EV battery can serve as a home battery storage solution of up to 50 kWh, both on-grid and off-grid, allowing homeowners to use their EV to back up their homes for extended periods in the event of a power outage ( V2H). The charger will be compatible with 400V and 800V EV powertrains via a standard CCS connector.
